Kayaking the Johnstone Straight, BC

In 2002 I took a week-long kayak trip in the Johnstone Straight BC with the guiding company Sea Kayak Adventures (www.seakayakadventures.com). It was there that I met my friend Jim Dorsey (www.jamesdorsey.com) who introduced me to the Los Angeles Adventurers Club (www.adventurersclub.org).

We were hoping to get up close and personal with some Orcas, but for the most part we only saw them from the shore or from a distance. On the next to the last day of our trip we came across one of the largest pods of Orcas seen that year feeding. They were catching fish by chasing them to the shore and then when the fish hit the shore, they turned around and the Orcas were ready.

We spent the whole afternoon with them and only left when we realized it was getting dark and we had to head to camp. At camp I could not get out of my boat for a while. I had to just sit there and savor the incredible experience of being surrounded by these beautiful amazing creatures.

I never had any fear - you just knew that they would do you no harm. I was also lucky that a professional writer and photographer Jad Davenort (www.jaddavenport.com) was on the trip who took some amazing photos of the trip - including some of me with the Orcas.
